African Stock Markets Show Resilience Amid Global Economic Uncertainty
African stock exchanges in key economies are defying global macroeconomic challenges by showing strong performance in 2025. Johannesburg’s JSE All Share Index crossed the 100,000-point mark in July, bolstered by gains in small and mid-cap stocks. Similarly, Nigeria’s Lagos stock market rose 38% in 2024 and has advanced another 17% in the first half of 2025, showcasing robust investor confidence despite global uncertainties. Compared to other regions, Africa’s markets demonstrate promising resilience — a vital sign of growing economic stability on the continent.
The performance contrast is stark when compared to regions experiencing steeper downturns this year, underlining Africa’s unique market dynamics.
The Bottom Line
Africa’s leading bourses are laying a foundation for sustained growth, supporting investor confidence and encouraging economic diversification across the continent.

BW Energy Secures Deepsea Mira Rig for //Kharas Appraisal Well Offshore Namibia
BW Energy, in partnership with Namcor Exploration and Production (Namcor E&P), has contracted the Deepsea Mira semi-submersible rig to drill the //Kharas appraisal well on the Kudu licence (PPL003) in Namibia’s Orange Basin. The drilling campaign is slated to begin in the second half of 2025.
Strategic Partnership and Rig Sharing Agreement
BW Energy holds a commanding 95% operating interest in the Kudu production licence, while Namcor E&P retains a 5% carried interest. This rig contract is part of a rig-sharing agreement managed by Northern Ocean Limited, with Rhino Resources Limited also involved, enabling efficient resource utilisation and local operational expertise.
Local Presence and Experienced Team
The contract, signed by BW Kudu Limited, ensures access to a rig stationed locally along with a highly experienced services team familiar with the Orange Basin’s operational environment. The project emphasises a high level of local content, supporting Namibia’s broader economic and industry development objectives.
Leveraging Lower-Risk Offshore Reserves
The Kudu gas development is integral to BW Energy’s strategy of targeting proven offshore reserves through phased, lower-risk developments. The company aims to expedite time to first production and reduce capital expenditure by leveraging existing infrastructure across its international portfolio, which spans Gabon, Brazil, and Namibia.
Robust Reserves Profile
At the start of 2025, BW Energy reported total estimated net 2P and 2C reserves and resources of 599 million barrels of oil equivalent, underscoring the strategic significance of its operations, including the Kudu licence.
The Bottom Line
BW Energy’s deepwater drilling campaign offshore Namibia, powered by the locally stationed Deepsea Mira rig and strengthened through partnership with Namcor E&P, marks a critical step in unlocking the Kudu gas field’s potential. This initiative aligns with Namibia’s ambitions to expand its offshore hydrocarbon sector while fostering local content and operational excellence.

N$4 Million Boost for Small-Scale Farmers in Erongo and Omusati: Namibia Expands Small Stock Initiative
The Namibian government has allocated N$4 million in the 2025/2026 financial year to empower 40 small-scale farmers in the Erongo and Omusati regions through the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform’s Small Stock Distribution and Development in Communal Areas (SSDDCA) programme.
Strategic Support through Livestock Distribution
Agriculture Minister Inge Zaamwani-Kamwi announced that each selected farmer will receive 20 ewes and one ram—resulting in 800 ewes and 40 rams distributed across the two regions. This marks the programme’s second round, which aims to ultimately benefit all 14 regions of Namibia. Since its inception in 2009, the SSDDCA has already supported 779 farmers nationwide, distributing over 15,580 ewes and 779 rams.
Revolving Model Fuels Sustainability
The SSDDCA operates on a revolving model where participating farmers return a set number of animals to keep the initiative moving forward. The approach ensures steady expansion into new communities and the sustainability of local breeding stock, critical during periods of drought and grazing pressure.
Strengthening Rural Livelihoods and Food Security
Minister Zaamwani-Kamwi highlighted the programme’s focus on strengthening rural livelihoods, promoting household food security, and supporting income generation. “This investment not only empowers farmers but also supports national goals of reducing poverty, enhancing food production, and uplifting rural communities,” she stated at the launch of the Hope Farm Project at Farm David West in Usakos.
Training, Veterinary Support, and Community Partnerships
To improve the chances of success, the Ministry collaborates with the Swakop Uranium Foundation, regional authorities, and other partners to deliver veterinary support, training, and ongoing monitoring. Beneficiaries receive not only livestock but essential training and follow-up services, ensuring sustainable farming practices and improved productivity.
The Bottom Line
Namibia’s N$4 million investment in small stock distribution represents a strategic step toward achieving greater food security, economic development, and poverty reduction in rural communities. By leveraging a revolving model, the SSDDCA is positioned to foster resilient farming communities and broaden its impact across all regions of the country.

Anton Lubowski Memorial Lecture Returns to Namibia to Honour Liberation Legacy
The family of the late Namibian liberation hero and anti-apartheid activist Anton Lubowski has announced that this year’s Anton Lubowski Memorial Lecture (ALML) will be held in Namibia, marking an important moment ahead of the 36th anniversary of his assassination on 12 September 1989.
Remembering a National Hero
Gabrielle Lubowski, widow of the late activist, reflected poignantly on a photograph taken the day after Anton’s death, saying, “This picture was taken on 13 September 1989. One day after our world fell apart.” She recounted the harrowing moment of receiving the devastating news: “Anton Lubowski was brutally and callously gunned down in front of our residence. I received the phone call at 20h40, just ten days before our planned return to Windhoek with our children for the September school holidays.”
A Platform for Reflection and Justice
The ALML will pay tribute to Lubowski’s enduring legacy as the first white member of SWAPO to be assassinated by apartheid forces, cementing his role as a symbol of courage and sacrifice in Namibia’s liberation struggle. The event seeks to be a critical space for dialogue on justice, reconciliation, and the unresolved challenges that remain from Namibia’s path to independence.
The Bottom Line
By hosting the Anton Lubowski Memorial Lecture on Namibian soil this year, the family and organisers reinforce the ongoing importance of remembering those who gave their lives for freedom. The lecture not only honours Lubowski’s personal sacrifice but also inspires continued engagement in Namibia’s pursuit of social justice and national healing.
