Heirs Energies Eyes Investment Opportunities in Namibia’s Oil and Gas Sector

Nigerian energy company Heirs Energies, part of the Heirs Holdings Group founded by entrepreneur Tony Elumelu, is considering investment in Namibia’s emerging oil and gas industry as part of its pan-African expansion strategy.

At the 2025 Namibia Oil and Gas Conference in Windhoek, Heirs Energies CEO Osayande Igiehon emphasized the company’s commitment to pan-Africanism. “That pan-African DNA is in us, and now that we’ve proven who we are in Nigeria, we’re ready to expand across Africa,” he said.

He explained that Heirs Energies has been actively studying multiple African markets to bring experience, capital, and long-term strategic focus to countries poised to grow their energy sectors. Namibia features prominently in their plans: “We are building our knowledge of Africa because we are going to be very focused on Namibia.”

Drawing lessons from Nigeria’s transformation over 25 years—from a market dominated by foreign oil majors to one where local companies produce 60% to 70% of oil output—Igiehon stressed the value of sharing these experiences with Namibia. “Our successes and mistakes are now available for other African countries like Namibia to learn from.”

Igiehon challenged Namibian entrepreneurs and policymakers to be ambitious and purpose-driven to close Africa’s energy access gap, which affects over 600 million people. “The opportunity spans the entire value chain—upstream, midstream, and downstream. Find your niche, build your capability, and stay focused,” he advised.

The third Namibia Oil and Gas Conference, themed “From Exploration to Action: Positioning Namibia as the Next Energy Frontier,” attracted 1,161 delegates and included 73 exhibitors. A highlight was the youth empowerment programme through Future Generations Masterclasses, held with the Namibia Energy Youth Forum, supporting over 60 young professionals exploring careers in Namibia’s nascent oil and gas sector.

The Bottom Line

Heirs Energies’ potential entry into Namibia’s oil and gas industry marks a promising chapter in Africa’s continental energy collaboration, backed by local expertise and a commitment to sustainable sector growth.

MTC Launches Buffalo Project to Enhance Rural Connectivity in Northern Namibia

Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has unveiled a rural network optimisation initiative, the Buffalo Project, aimed at closing coverage gaps and improving service quality in underserved rural areas of northern Namibia.

A recent audit spanning over 2,000 kilometres across Outapi, Oshakati, Rundu, and Katima Mulilo revealed that many rural mobile towers are hampered by outdated infrastructure. Several towers suffer from low antenna heights and limited 4G/LTE coverage, relying mainly on GSM or 3G networks with LTE signals servicing smaller ranges than intended. Power inconsistencies and improper antenna alignment along key travel routes further degrade service reliability.

Conducted in partnership with Huawei, the audit informed the Buffalo Project’s multifaceted approach:

  • Raising tower heights

  • Relocating poorly positioned sites

  • Upgrading rural infrastructure to widespread 4G LTE

  • Enhancing overall network reliability in rural communities

MTC emphasizes that the Buffalo Project is a bold step to bridge the digital divide, ensuring rural Namibians receive the same high-quality connectivity experienced in urban areas. Plans are in place to extend this initiative nationwide to tackle similar challenges beyond the north.

This effort builds on MTC’s 081Every1 programme, which successfully aimed to achieve full national population coverage.

The Bottom Line

The Buffalo Project exemplifies MTC’s commitment to transforming Namibia’s digital landscape by boosting rural network performance, supporting economic inclusion, and fostering equitable access to modern communications.
