Windhoek Approves Building Plans Worth Over N$9.9 Billion from 2020 to 2025

The City of Windhoek has approved building plans valued at more than N$9.9 billion over the last five years, marking a significant milestone in the capital's urban development and economic expansion. This announcement was made by Windhoek Mayor Her Worship Ndeshihafela Larandja in the July 2025 municipal newsletter, The Aloe.

Key Highlights of the Announcement

  • Investment Significance: The approved building plans reflect the city’s dedication to infrastructure development, urban planning, and responsive governance in response to a growing population and rising demand for housing and commercial spaces.

  • Council Term Achievement: Mayor Larandja identified the approval of these plans as a key achievement of the current council term (2020–2025), emphasizing the figure as a testament to efforts in fostering investment, growth, and urban renewal.

  • Robust Process: The approval process ensures adherence to zoning, building regulations, and environmental standards, signaling strong confidence from both public and private sectors in Windhoek’s capacity for large-scale projects.

  • Economic Multipliers: The construction activity is expected to stimulate local employment across construction, engineering, architecture, and related sectors, supporting national goals like reducing housing shortages and spurring economic recovery post-pandemic.

Additional Council Achievements

Alongside building approvals, the council reported progress in essential services:

  • Electrification of over 4,000 homes

  • Construction of a N$235 million electricity substation

  • Installation of nearly 200 communal toilets and over 220 water points in informal settlements

These initiatives contribute to enhanced service delivery and efforts to reduce inequality across the city.

Mayor’s Reflections on Governance and Community

Mayor Larandja highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability during her term, acknowledging challenges such as difficult decisions and delays. She emphasized open communication as a means to build civic trust and engagement.

She also expressed gratitude to residents, community groups, organizations, and city staff whose collaborative efforts made these milestones possible, stating, “None of this was done in isolation.”

Looking Ahead

As the council term nears its end, the City of Windhoek will continue focusing on sustainable urban management, regulatory compliance, and community engagement. The approval of high-value building projects lays a strong foundation for ongoing growth, while the Mayor calls for patience and cooperation in managing relocations, infrastructure upgrades, and future challenges.

Mayor Larandja concluded:
“As we step into the final four months of this Council’s term, let us remain focused, united, and hopeful. Whether in building infrastructure or fostering community partnerships, we are collectively shaping a city rooted in justice, dignity, and opportunity.”

Future Reporting

Details about the approved projects and their distribution across constituencies will be released in the council’s forthcoming final term report.

The Bottom Line

Windhoek’s approval of nearly N$10 billion in building plans from 2020 to 2025 highlights a dynamic phase of urban growth and economic confidence, underpinned by a commitment to sustainable development, service delivery, and inclusive governance.

MTC Launches 5G Services in Namibia, Pioneering Next-Generation Connectivity

Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC), Namibia's leading digital enabler, announced the deployment and soft launch of its 5G network on 24 August 2025 during the annual Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair (OATF). With this launch, MTC becomes the first operator in Namibia to provide 5G technology, initially available in Ongwediva, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, and Windhoek.

MTC’s Chief Technical and Information Officer, Monica Nehemia, expressed pride in bringing 5G to the market, emphasizing its transformative potential. She stated, “The connectivity power and seamlessness that comes with 5G is exactly what we need to propel the digitisation of enterprise solutions across Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, cloud computing, and payments. This will enhance business operations, efficiency, and foster innovation and scalability.”

The launch marks a significant milestone in Namibia’s digital journey, moving from 2G technology to next-generation 5G infrastructure. MTC plans an aggressive rollout over the coming months to expand access nationwide, ensuring all Namibians can benefit from faster, more reliable connectivity.

Looking ahead, MTC aspires to position itself as Namibia’s leading purpose-driven technology company by 2030. The rollout of 5G is expected to unlock vast opportunities across sectors such as immersive gaming, smart warehousing, telemedicine, and smart irrigation, contributing to the country’s goal of becoming a smart digital economic enabler.

This announcement builds on MTC’s successful 5G trials conducted in February 2024 and aligns with Namibia’s broader vision for a fully connected future.

The Bottom Line

MTC’s 5G launch sets the stage for accelerated digital transformation in Namibia, opening new horizons for innovation, economic growth, and inclusive access to cutting-edge technology.

Jefferies Raises S&P 500 Year-End Target to 6,600 on Strong Earnings and Economic Resilience

Jefferies has increased its year-end price target for the S&P 500 index to 6,600, up from the previous target of 5,600, signaling growing confidence in the U.S. economy. This move aligns Jefferies with other leading brokerage firms like UBS, Citigroup, and HSBC, which have recently raised their forecasts amid improved market sentiment.

Market Drivers and Earnings Momentum

The market rally is led by artificial intelligence-driven companies, including the influential "Magnificent Seven," which have propelled gains alongside notable strength in the financial sector. Jefferies analyst Desh Peramunetilleke highlighted these factors as evidence of a resilient macroeconomic environment.

Despite a sharp downturn in April following President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" tariff announcement, U.S. equities have rebounded strongly. This recovery is underpinned by robust corporate earnings fueled by the ongoing AI boom. Jefferies anticipates the S&P 500's earnings per share (EPS) to rise by nearly 10% in 2025, reaching $267, reflecting solid profit growth expectations.

Interest Rate Outlook

Jefferies also reaffirmed its projection that the U.S. Federal Reserve will implement three additional interest rate cuts this year, beginning in September. This forecast follows a more cautious tone from Fed Chair Jerome Powell, expressed at the Jackson Hole symposium, amid concerns over labor market dynamics.

Summary

Jefferies’ updated outlook paints a bullish picture for the U.S. equity market, driven by strong earnings growth, technological innovation, financial sector resilience, and prospects of monetary easing. This combination supports sustained upward momentum for the S&P 500 through the remainder of 2025.

Anton Lubowski Memorial Lecture Returns to Namibia to Honour Liberation Legacy

The family of the late Namibian liberation hero and anti-apartheid activist Anton Lubowski has announced that this year’s Anton Lubowski Memorial Lecture (ALML) will be held in Namibia, marking an important moment ahead of the 36th anniversary of his assassination on 12 September 1989.

Remembering a National Hero

Gabrielle Lubowski, widow of the late activist, reflected poignantly on a photograph taken the day after Anton’s death, saying, “This picture was taken on 13 September 1989. One day after our world fell apart.” She recounted the harrowing moment of receiving the devastating news: “Anton Lubowski was brutally and callously gunned down in front of our residence. I received the phone call at 20h40, just ten days before our planned return to Windhoek with our children for the September school holidays.”

A Platform for Reflection and Justice

The ALML will pay tribute to Lubowski’s enduring legacy as the first white member of SWAPO to be assassinated by apartheid forces, cementing his role as a symbol of courage and sacrifice in Namibia’s liberation struggle. The event seeks to be a critical space for dialogue on justice, reconciliation, and the unresolved challenges that remain from Namibia’s path to independence.

The Bottom Line

By hosting the Anton Lubowski Memorial Lecture on Namibian soil this year, the family and organisers reinforce the ongoing importance of remembering those who gave their lives for freedom. The lecture not only honours Lubowski’s personal sacrifice but also inspires continued engagement in Namibia’s pursuit of social justice and national healing.
